Mifare

Mifare is the most widely used contactless smart card technology in the world. It was originally developed for contactless ticket purchases in public transport. According to the manufacturer, more than 10 billion cards and 150 million card readers have been sold so far. The Mifare transponder does not need a battery and is powered by the magnetic field of the locking system (read/write module). The transponder works at a distance of up to 10 cm. Mifare uses a frequency of 13.561 MHz and allows both reading and writing on the transponder medium. This is made possible by the fact that the medium has several sectors, each of which is independently protected against unauthorised reading or writing.  The use of sectors allows the same transponder to be used for several different applications ("multi-application"). For this reason, Mifare is the most commonly used standard in the fitness sector. Here, the Mifare transponder can be used for access, locker room access, payment, equipment data storage, training data storage and vending.
