RFID

RFID (radio-frequency identification) refers to a technology for transmitter-receiver systems for automatic and contactless identification with radio waves. The RFID system consists of a transponder containing an identifying code and a reader for reading this identification.

The coupling is done by short-range alternating magnetic fields generated by the reader or by high-frequency radio waves. This not only transmits data, but also supplies the transponder with energy. To achieve greater ranges, active transponders with their own power supply are used, but these are associated with higher costs.

The reader contains software (a microprogram) that controls the actual reading process and RFID middleware with interfaces to other EDP systems and databases.
