Smart Lock

A smart lock is an electronic locking system whose locking and opening processes are managed via the network or a mobile device. Smart locks can usually be controlled with a smartphone, e.g. via a corresponding app. A Smart Lock can be opened remotely.

The term gained importance in the context of the "smart home" trend. Smart locks enable different rights to be assigned to users, for example if certain employees are only to have access at defined times. In this way, one-time, recurring or time-limited access can be set up. These access rights are synchronised via a radio protocol (e.g. encrypted via W-Lan, Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy / BLE, ...). Access can be granted and revoked again. A log can be used to show who has opened or closed the lock.

With a Smart Lock, the locking and opening processes are permanently synchronised with a management system. Notifications can be sent as soon as the lock is used. If the lock is opened, the light in the room can be switched on. It can also be realised that attempts to break open or tamper with the lock are signalled by an alarm. In the case of battery-operated Smart Locks, the battery status can usually be viewed via a corresponding interface so that the batteries can be replaced at an early stage in the event of a loss of power.
